Rafting in the Ganges.

Dear all,

If you're thinking my rafting trip was a cooked up cock and bull story, then here's some pictures. Many thanks to Sandeep and family for providing them :D
The trip with Red Chillies, which was featured in Lonely Planet, was a bit more costly but worth every cent. Anyway I always pay more to ensure all the were reasonably paid and all the safety precautions were sufficient.

Bhim, the guy in red, was the one who kept us alive through the whole journey. BTW he is also a yoga master. Nothing but respect for him. We were crowding around the campfire as the night was damn chilly. I have like 4 layers (5 if include sand) in me.

Happy New Year!
By the time you read this, I'm already back in Singapore!
Most of you must have heard about the horrendous touts, the unbelivable living conditions and other SHITTY stuff. But I'm sure there are more to see as I have yet to alight at one of the rural villages, always making my stop at the big cities. Don't have that kind of courage at the moment.
For those who did not attend yesterday's 12 hrs gathering, I'm sorry, we didn't leave any Masala chips for you.

Took some pics with my lousy camera, and then it went out of battery. There're more from my 3D2N rafting expedition but they're with my Indian friend now. Will post it when I have them.

I guess the water is much cleaner in the morning but not that clean since there's others washing their clothes and burning corpses just a few meters away. And all the sewages goes into the river as well. The water must be cold since i'm wearing 3 layers inside but i cannot bring my fingers to touch the water to test temp.

Hi all,

Happy 2010! Curious why m i posting here instead of my own blog? well, as laiyi says, no one bothers to check my blog anymore...*sniff* so i'll just post here like jhjy...heh...

You must be wondering by now, what made me want to post today..well, just wanted to let you guys know before you hear it from others....okie...stop, it's not dat i'm attached or getting married...

Take a deep breath and stay calm before you read on....

Yesterday i met with an accident while i was crossing the road...i m the safe pedestrain, crossed when it was green man, and got knocked by a motorcyclist from malaysia...he was with his gf...another couple who was driving a car stopped to help...all arnd late 20s to early 30s....had a bump on my head, abrasions on my arms, injured my tailbone...the passerby couple got ice from the nearby house to ease the swelling on my head...called fer an ambulance and i was sent to nuh...the motorcyclist and gf waited till the ambulance reached before they left...i guess i shocked my whole family...but like i told my mum, if aniting more serious, it wun b me calling her oreadi....so doc examined me and concluded i suffered from superficial injuries...*i'm so lucky*....i knew i'm fine lar...but was glad the doc's comments calmed my mum down...and so i'm given 3 days mc...

and so, fer now, i can walk slowly, sit slowly, squat slowly, and bend slowly...other than dat, i'm ok...i was back at werk just now...1/2 day...and had to lodge a report to give my statement at the police station in ubi this afternoon...

a new experience for a start in 2010...trying out the ambulance, entering the AnE as a patient (i've been inside before lar...cos of my student), reporting at the police station....

lesson learnt: wait fer vehicles to stop on both lanes first before crossing even when the light turned green....i guess i had to learn the hard way....*shrug*

Halo everybody..

Mr JH and i would like to wish everyone a Happy 2010. May it be a fruitful year for all of us!

Juz a quick recap on the events that happened on the last day of 2009.

Mr Hole-in-the-intestine JH decided to bring his big-ass camera out to take some pictures to commerate day.

Smartie yin dictated him to park car at Beach Road to avoid frustration later on... All will be explained in pictures later.

Anyway we met up some frens and went for dinner at Waraku Pasta.

Fast forward to a few hours later, at around 10.30pm, we decided to brave the crowd in search of a good spot for one of the top favourite Sporeans' activity: Fireworks watching. Let's ignore the fact that JH was being dragged along.

Okie.. so we decided that nearer the action is always better. Onward to Esplanade we go. But, alas, ALL ROADS, SHORTCUTS, LINKS to Esplanade are closed!! Damnit!

As we all know, Sporeans are a bunch of ingenious people. Wherever u can think of, they are there. As we can't cross the damn road, we went to camp at some staircase. And the staircase is also FULLLLLLL!!! Well, manage to grab a spot on the staircase and we decided to stay put.

While waiting for the fire-works, we witness how Sporeans, for the sake of fireworks, decided to throw their obedience away. Some smart-asses decided that the stupid barricade is damn bo liao and decided to push it away and they dashed across the road. Let us be reminded that the freaking road isn't closed and there are still vechicles dashing around. So, one does it, everyone decided to chiong for it too.. So for a moment, there are chaos along the road. Until the police managed to keep everyone in control.

As the fireworks start, we saw a spooky thing. Most of the fireworks watchers were induced into a trance. 90% of them whipped out their cameras and took video of the fireworks. Anyway, Mr JH didn't take a picture of it... it's quite a sight.

Finally, we oso spotted alien intrusion in the midst of the countdown! See below...

For info of those whom are juz back from ur trips, Korea was hell fun! Snow skiing is like nothing I ever tried, strongly recommend everyone to give it a try if you have the chance.

If u checked out my Korean album in FB, the first day i tried out this super insanely sweet and yummylicious strawberries there. So nice I think i whacked like 10+ of them in the day. Maybe tats how the freaking strawberries seeds got struck somewhere.

To cut the story short, I developed a kind of muscle strained pain on my right abdomen on the 2nd day. Thinking I might have "over-played" I oso din tink much abt it. Surely enough, it gotten worst on my 3rd day, but of cos I oso tong la. (strong 1 leh) The fun makes U forget all the pain sia. This is very true.

Till the 4th day, JY forced me to see the doctor there then I know its no joke liao. I had initially feared that it to be appendicities. Which if really the case, I would have to cut short my holiday and fly back straight(NoOoO!!!). Stupid Korea medical hospitals oso damn cannot make it, doctors all dont work on weekends. So no matter what ultrasound scans, X-ray, can take..but no doctors to read! After going like 4 different hospitals, I finally managed to get an ultrasound done and thankfully it isnt appendicitis. My symptoms appear to be called Diverticulities. Not spell of the spelling ah. I shall google to find more info on it. After I came back for a checkup, the doctor just told me I am probably 1 of those suay ones whom are borned with it. My big intestine walls are quite thin, so it might form a bulge/hole. Infection will occur when some food(strawberries seeds, my assumption) gets stuck there.

Well, I am done with my dose of anti-biotics and what shit not. No more pain liao, but of cos still muz go for a colonscopy to find out if I am REALLY fine inside. This sickening procedure involves me taking some laxative and the doctor sticking something up my arse. awwwww.........to end it all, its costing me in excess of $1000. To hell with it !!!

As you might all have guessed, I cannot have too "exciting" food these days to kinda ease off my infection and that includes BBQ food. So shit...I am thinking this coming Sunday, we have to change our plans a bit, I am thinking of changing it to a each buy-ur-fav-food potluck session den come my place eat( No spicy food to tempt me, U evil shits!)

PLS SMS ME TO INFORM WHAT U BE BRINGING TO ENSURE NO REPEATS!

BTW, as per our mini gathering for Zombieland with the rest, we have a "buy-each-a-cup" theme this XMAS! As the name implies, we are supposed to get each other A CUP/mug/flask/thermal flask/Starbucks cup as the xmas gifts. It seems like everyone needs 1. LOL...

November Gathering 2009

Anyway, this time round it wasn't any good job done. Many reasons lah, but most people will say it's just excuses. So I'll just say it's my incompetence, okay? -___-

Anyway, also nothing much to talk. Our official cameraman and camerawoman never bring camera, what to do? So just a quick summary.

For non-wmw members/readers, please do not get mixed up over the posts - yes, this is the July outing, posted later than the August outing.

July 2009 is a multi-organizer outing held on 11 July 2009. hmm... thats like 1 mth ago. JJ wanted to organize but we also asked ly to organize cos he is back. i duno how jhjy, sc got involved. Sooooo... ended up:

Aiya, I cannot wait anymore, so, sorry guys... I'm going to finish up my Aug gathering before you get a chance to do your post.

So the Aug meeting was like a gathering in the 4th consecutive week. The weekend after the July gathering, we meet for cycling at east coast and the following weekend we had dinner and watched Harry Potter in town. The venue this time is Fortune Cuisine at Sunset way. It offers international buffet for steamboat/bbq. JJJ smsed me at 3+ to inform me she had to bring her kids to Istana the next day and got to wake up super duper early so was unable to join us for dinner the night before. Having made reservations, I didn't exactly worry about getting there in time but still I was the first to arrive and was commanded to get the seats warmed and prepare food while awaiting the arrival of our princes and princesses. Shortly after, the whole gang was here. Serene and CT had some trouble getting to our event venue and we had some long dissussion online on the best and easiest way to get there but in the end were escoted safely by our saikang prince. After JH and co arrived, our malaysian prince, the birthday boy, joined us and just after as we started eating, our fishball prince, tanned and tired for the afternoon ride with Garry, filled up the final gap.

The whole night I was busy eating the tempura, crayfish and prawns so not much time to bother about the rest. But I noticed not many people touched the mala pot except me. I also didn't go over to Jh's table to try the Tom Yum:(
And the bbq pot was like so small!! Very hard to peng for everyone because we have only two of them but i can survive without it cos I don't need the additional heat. Not a ton of varieties but good enough for us.

It was about ten before we realised this gathering was to celebrate Garry's birthday. We got the card but no cakes, anyone nobody had room for cake at that time. When we decided to just get a cake for sing song and blow candles, none of the bakeries were still operating. So Garry, we owe you one :)
In the end we signed off the cards (yes, and Jh's one. The one i sent in March. Don't know why it only got delivered now). Hopefully we'll meet once more to celebrate Garry's birthday this month, I'll get the cake for sure!

It's CNY month, and so it was a steamboat dinner @ the Gardens. Everyone somehow remembers the fishball terror but not who's the organiser. Neh mind......... Anyway, it was a lesson learnt that day - WMW people don't like to eat fishball. =\

Well, while the wedding couple was getting ready for their entrance to the Collyer ballroom (which we duno where they are), we did some snap shots.

April 2009 gathering

Its been a long time since i did a post.. abit rusty...

Our April 2009 gathering had quite abit of last min change of plans. Nevertheless, it went on as planned....

We were supposedly to meet at 6pm at Melben crab @ AMK for dinner. We had to meet early as Melben usually has a long queue. This time, unexpectedly the queue was short. Ok, the organizer (ie. me) reached at ard 730pm due to work reasons. SC reached the earliest and managed to get a table way too fast. Well, he had to moved back the queue cos no one reached and we had to place the order b4 we can get the table. Thanks to sc for his queueing. JHJY reached shortly, followed by rene, me then jjj.

Well, when i reached, the foursome already has placed order for a lot of food. It seems as thou we haven eaten for ages..

Mar 2009 Gathering

2 things to apologise ferst before i type...

1. late confirmation of the gathering
2. the pics r not available for tis post cos my SD card seems to be infected wif virus....haiz...cos the sch's computers all kena virus....sianz....

Despite the last min organization, was happie to see most of us today...initially i wanted to go paintball + dnr....then change to ktv + dnr....ended up we went dnr + movie....okie...boring...i shall do better the next time k!

since it was simple enuff a gathering, i tot at least we cld try some different cuisines...turkish mediterranean! either at arab street or sofra...decided on sofra cos at least i cld reserve a table there....have been there once personally but different company brings different feel to a place...i tink the food was not too bad...but the drinks were quite a letdown...my mocktail is like orange juice with some nuts n raisins; the turkish lemonade was like normal lemonade; the turkish coffee tho served in a nice small cup tastes like kopi-o...

after which, jjj left as they had another gathering on....we proceeded to cathay to watch "race to witch mountain"....had lotsa time so we walked there....

jjj are kinda done wif their new hse...bot a 42 inch tv at arnd $1.2k n got $400 NTUC voucher...good deal man!

Ybor city is a historical neighbourhood in Tampa. Similiar to Singapore, it's an immigrant city. Germans, Italians, Cubans and Spainards.
It's known for cigar making. And the most interesting part of the trip was to learn about cigar and the independence of Cuba.
"From 1881-1895, the Cuban writer and Revolutionary Jose Marti lived in New York City. When he finally returned to liberate Cuba from Spanish rule, he headed the support of thousands of Cuban cigar makers who fled to Key West and Tampa. The plans for the rebellion were sent from Key West to Havana rolled in a cigar."
Someone must have been inspired by the mooncake story.

JH's HK Trip Highlights...Part 2!

This is using a different approach here. JY will be writing part 2 but I will upload the photos U see la. Of cos maybe add in and edit a bit...here goes

4th day, we went to see the Big Buddha Statue at the Lautau island. Took MTR and cable car to reach there. The cable car is really an experience. Coz it’s steep and well, it’s higher than Spore’s. Anyway the whole ride is about 30 min. And at some part, you might experience some swaying of the cable car due to strong winds.

So basically we walked up to see the Big Buddha thing, look at their museum and temple and ate their vegetarian meal. Eh… the food is quite ex.. and not very nice. But there is a cheaper alternative juz beside the restaurant. And the food there looks better! Darn… Jh is damn sad he din get to eat his vegetarian beehoon.

After tuanging some time, we went back to mainland HK. Window-shopped at Citygate. There’s some nice shops.. like Adidas, that’s selling at a cheaper price.

We then decided to go back to Mid-levels for egg tarts again!!! Wheeee… wanted to get the yummy milk tea too.. but it’s closed!! Bah…
And we went to eat the so-called famous Yung Kee Roasted goose. As of 2009, this Yung Kee had won 1-michelin star award for their roasted goose. Lol
Had the goose… it’s not too bad.. but dun really worth the money.. and that place is a mercenary place!! Other than the goose, we had some fried Hor Fun.. which really taste quite bad. Think these 2 dishes cost ard $50 odd?

Alas, it was the last day in shopping-paradise HK. Well, before we pack up our stuff to head for Macau, JH bravely stormed through another shopping frenzy with me. *Gives bravery award to JH*

Okie… after some intensive shopping, we went to hunt for something to eat. No porkchop rice anywhere for us. So we settled for some char chan teng. But it taste good too! Yummy roasted pork and duckie!!

This 源记 could also be easily found in HK and man, the roasted pork is SHIOK...

BTW, I need some enlightenment. When you step into a char chan teng and the waiter serves you a glass of hot tea. Are you supposed to drink it? Or is it meant to wash your utensils?

After eating, we went in hunt for more girl accessories while JH grudgingly walked from 1 end to the other end of a huge MRT station with me.

So after all the shopping hassle and JH’s looking at the watch action, we took a cab to the ferry terminal and board the ferry to Macau. JH immediately conked out after that…. Leaving me to look at him sadly while he slps.

When we reach Macau, 1 thing that strikes me the most was that…. Macau looks boring in daylight. I mean.. it’s all brown and grey. A huge contrast from neon-light filled HK.
But anyway, we reached there and started hunting for our shuttle bus to our hotel, Holiday Inn Macau.

The service was quite good. This guy recommended us to eat in this Portugese restaurant, Porto-Extero. The food is really good! We ate most of our meals here. They have this spicy chicken chop that is SUPER SUPER NICE…. Pls eat it when u are there!!

This is in a small corner beside Rio Casino which can be easily found. Strongly advise JJJ to try this out. Really freaking nice Porteguese food. Cant recall the pricing...but its managable. So nice we decided to hv our next day's lunch there again...and more surprises! Pics below...

After dinner, we went on to Venetician. It’s really huge. Spend lotsa time taking funny shots. (There wasn’t any1 around. So camwhore skills at full display) Walked around Venetician and listen to the Opera singing of those boat rowers. We of coz din hire the gondola. We juz stand around and load in to the free show!! Teeheehee….
Their singing is really not bad. Wonder if they hv some hidden mic?

I must say this, if U had limited time to go Macau, pls DEFINITELY visit Venetian. Its really a highlight of Macau. SO much more amazing than the Ruins. At least for me. I deeply regret not slurging to 1 nite stay in Venetian. I believe it cost around $300+, but its another experience altogether.

The place is so freaking nice that we took many photos and would be unjust to not share them. Uploaded them to slide...and I shall juz paste the few which I really like here, do check the slide collection out as well!

Then, of coz we went to gamble abit…. Mr gambler JH likes to play electronic tables. And we lost!! Played jackpot… and LOST AGAIN!!! Roars!! We went back feeling quite dejected…

But the casino do have some performances now and then. It’s quite entertaining. We chanced upon some international dancing.

Next day, ate at some lousy char chan teng opp our hotel.. Eewwww…. one of the lousiest food that we ate. Took a cab to the Senoko Sq to visit the St Paul Ruins and to buy all those food stuff. Well, we think that the St Paul Ruins are overhyped. But it’s like been-there-done-that. Take some pictures, walk around and u can go.
Spent a small fortune there and came out of the store with 4 bag full of those food stuff.
Went to hunt for some pork chop bun too. Suppose to be 1 of the must-eat in Macau. Though I wonder why…. It’s not bad, meat is tender. But that’s about it. But do try the Po lo bun if u see any nice bakery with a lot of people buying. It’s nice!! And their Portuguese egg tarts are famed as well….. I feel quite hungry now…. Sigh… my pork chop rice!!!! I want to eat u!!

After all the eating, we cabbed to this Gaum Lighthouse… (dunno if it’s correct). It’s a nice place with serene environment and a nice overview of the Macau’s city. Lotsa greenery and fresh air too. They have some old Catholic art work that I think it’s worth a visit.

Trekked down and hailed a cab and back to our fave restaurant for our last Portuguese meal. Which is back to the restaurant last nite...today we tried their BBQ Chicken...though you have to wait 30mins for it, but its well worth the wait!

Seems like we took a lot of cabs. That’s bcoz the cab fares are cheap.. so take cab! Hehe… but if u are a walking person, i think walking will allow you to explore the city better.

Then we are off to airport, back to Sillypore again……..

Yes, yes, yes.. This post is super late. =p At home busy with other stuff, then at work no photo to upload mah. But still, some effort is made now, photos uploaded and ready to rock 'n roll!

Let's have a recap of our Jan '09 gathering!

Prior to CNY, it's a good time to have a good reunion dinner. And what's a reunion dinner without steamboat? Sadly, this time round LY wasn't around. But never mind, he will be back soon! Soon... Anyway, the gathering was held at The Gardens (Teban Gardens)

There's no photo on buying of the food. Cameraman not around. Basically I met up with CT she was kind enough to help me out) to buy food at IMM's Giant. Never prepared a shopping list beforehand, buy with instinct and guts.

Back at my house, me and CT were trying to prepare the food. Then one super hao lian and ge kiang person (my mum actually) complained we were doing this and that wrong, and preparing too slow liao. So she showed off her skill. We just stood there and watched. Nothing to do. Want to show off, let her show off lor...... *tsk*

So me and CT nothing to do liao. Only bringing stuff out to the table and set up stuff, etc etc. First to arrive I think was JHJY. Before coming here, here's a photo they took at downstair.

I didn't know my block has this super old model of coin payphone. Great... Good job in noticing that. It's still operational okay!

Then slowly, people started to turn up... One here, two there.. eh.. no more. JJJ weren't here this time round. Reason - not worth mentioning either. LOL. So the attendees were me, Rene, CT, JHJY and Garry&Kat (sorry, spouse had to be bundled with the original member, bcos I'm just lazy to split the entity).

Initially still thought not enough food wor. The table looked kinda empty.

I don't dare to buy a lot of stuff leh. Because hor, every year, every steamboat held at my house, people always want more variety of food, so buy this buy that buy everything. End up lots of excess food, AND I GOTTA EAT THEM FOR MY NEXT FEW DINNERS! PUI!!

I tried to buy the just right amount of food. But guess my estimation wasn't that good. But with the absence of JJJ, the amount of food seemed okay then. Not that JJJ were big eater or what, but 2/9 missing was quite a high percentage you see. Slightly over 20% attendance missing leh. That means 20% less food needed. So ya, not saying JJJ big eater okay!

Know why so many balls inside? Because 1-2 rounds before the last round, I realised "Where's my fuzhou fishball?" DAMN!! THEY WERE STILL IN THE FRIDGE WITH ALL THE OTHER FISHBALLS!!! And no one noticed why no fishball. Wait, that's a reason to that too. Because EVERYONE THERE DON'T LIKE FISHBALLS!!! Crap... I was thinking fishball is one of the most generic steamboat food that everyone eats, but apparently most (if not all) of us don't like fishball! JH's HK Trip Highlights & Photos Part 1...

I was really juz plain lazy to even do this post. But I just tot it be nice to share it with you ppl afterall. Instead of doing a everyday walk through, I am juz gonna scale down and share just the highlights of the trip. Not to bore everyone...

My trip was planned as a 6d5n trip with 5d4n at HK. The plan was to fly in to Macau and den immediately ferry straight to HK. Spend 4 nights there and ferry back to Macau to spend a night there. This arrangement was to cut cost and fly Tiger to Macau straight.

Now for those whom havent had the chance to take budget airline, this is my first as well. Well, lets juz say for short trips its ok la...for those longer trips...I tink its better to stick to full fledge airlines. It can get boring, the legroom is pretty much the same though.

Lets dive straight to the action..

Basically starving now liao, it was a 6am flight, reached the lousy budget terminal at 4am! When we checked into the hotel, juz nice 12+pm. First meal alwiz not much choice...but still...we noticed this packed noodle store right beside our hotel....

The fish/meat balls are yummy! Noodles is just nice man. I cant exactly recall the cost...not dirt cheap but wun be more than $10 a person..

The following pics are for Jiajun and Johnny, since they are oso shortlisting for HK hotels...juz to show our rooms at Cityview...I gotten a upgraded package...so this arent the "standard rooms.

Its new year's eve so basically just HK touring and countdown at night!

Our first dinner...at their popular chinese chain 美心 its like our crystal jade kitchen chain...but thankfully cheap and gd deal man..

Next day was city tour. Straight into 上環. Today is very much shopping for JY's Agnes B bags and to sample the so called even BEST dim sum in HK. We went to the 美心皇宫. Again, this is similar to Crystal Jade Palance...sadly...this time the price also similar!!

Really yummy dim sum, especially the last dou hua there. I dare say easily beat Selegie dou hua 10x. Its THAT freaking heavenly and godlike...now tink back still is drool....

Next is to the IFC building! Shop for all the high end stuff. Happy JY gotten her Agnes B nia...

Next is to Middle Levels for some more mid-range shopping... its really an old street with Brands like H&M, Esprit and what not...

I tink SPECIAL Attention must be taken here. If U go HK, U DIE DIE MUST eat this egg tart! Its like U nv been there if U dun try this! Simply the most amazing egg tart ever. Its like made from the devil itself! For those who read HK reviews...this will pop out constantly..its in this street at Middle Levels....kinda hard to find at first. I took some time going through the maps.

The above Lan Fong Yuen is also very famous for their sock-style milk-tea...so there U go! Middle Levels has these 2 MUST trys...heh

Shopping till drop and its time to go up The Peak. Insane tram ride....long que even when we buy the freaking ex combo tix which lets U into the wax museum. Not exactly my cup of tea...

Next day is basically Disney land! Why Disney instead of Ocean Park? We were deciding between the 2, of cos Ocean Park is cheaper especially U get 10% discount if U take the cable car to see the huge buddha at Lantau island. But finally decided Disney...simply becos its newer and more expensive :D

Dinner tt night is the famous pork chop rice at their 大家乐. Its easily available and really shdnt be missed out..JY swear by this. She "claims" to be able to eat it everyday

Am in bloomington for the Pride film festival.... Super small scale. I wished they screened Milk but nah. Small University town and the film sucks... big time. Yes..... Time to lose that fat.

Hey ppl,

I finally decided that its well past deadline for my post. So I shall kick all my lazy bugs away to write this. Any later, that sibei free SC is gonna come say he is delayed becos of me liao.

Anyway, this 1 is like a "bonus" stage for me, how I tio Dec organiser, I oso dunno sia. Somehow, I muz have been slping when I agreed to organise the Dec event, somemore still ownself throw stone at feet, do MAJOR event - BBQ.

Well, after finalising the the date, I realised that JY cant make it since she had to go back to Msia, means I have to do all the sai! Well, the whole round of booking out food from BBQ wholesale, confirming the order, buying the misc and drinks in the afternoon and bah bah.

Can nv imagine, this time round, the earliest to arrive at my place would be SC and CT! Must give them award leh. Come earlier to help and set fire. Appreciate tat. I mean they are even earlier den me leh! (I was out sending jy back home)

My longest trip yet, tons to write but very lazy. Point form okay? Wrote most of these on my super long flight home… 3 connecting flights. 6hrs. Can you believe that. Damn. And don’t ask me how much it cost.
- On my way to Richmond from NYC, the flight attendant looks 60 and the plane is only 1/5 filled.
- Do I look like a terrorist? Was stopped by the NYPD in the metro this morning and “specially selected” by the aviation security team for a more detailed check (after standing in line for ½ hr only to be told you have to line up again!) in the airport.
- Vacation ending is like a breakup… can be 好聚好散，依依不舍 or解脱 etc. This time brought back a few heartaches with me.
- Spent my xmas eve in Toronto. The whole airport is empty except for those flying to Toronto. Can hardly see that. Was on a direct flight, how can anything cock up right but so suay my flight got delayed TWICE and I managed to reach Toronto and 12mn. Even the currency exchange counters were all closed. Bad start. I tried to call the hostel which I had reservation and nobody pick up. Great. Time to panic.
- Luckily my friend Gabe was kind enough to allow me to crash at his place. We chatted till 4 before sleeping since I knew everywhere would be closed the next day.
- On my first white xmas I moved into my hostel and spent most of my time wandering in good old reliable Chinatown. Had Jap buffet for 12 dollars. Beat whatever you have in every aspect.
- The Chinatown in Toronto is gigantic. But still could not find the red packets I wanted. The one ZW mum gave a few years ago that’s still in my wallet.

- Boxing day is really a sale day. Not into shopping so went to Bata museum and sent out a few emails to seek carpool to Montreal. Had thai dinner with Tye and his partner and a long chat at their place, including their adventure in the prison of Bolivia!

- On sat I rolled down the stairs. So if you take a close look at my Niagara pics, you can see a swollen nose and cut on my upper lips. Cold and raining, foggy too. But still the view is magnificent :D Met Anna and she was my travelling mate for the day.
- After a day and still nobody replied to my emails. Cham. Cannot go Montreal as planned. Oh well. Was making my way to CN tower and someone finally called. 6pm on that evening. Agreed immediately.

Some general knowledge for you

On my flight to Cincinnati, hit my head against the ceiling (again!) and the young air stewardess has a belly bigger than most mums.
- I really like Toronto. So cosmopolitan. Feels like being in HK or Singapore. At times, there were more Chinese than Caucasians. Sadly I didn’t get to meet Gabe before I leave Toronto. He’s really a very nice guy and a fan of Singapore.
- Met my driver in one of the metro station and he turns out to be an Indian! Pleasant surprise. With my limited knowledge of Indian culture from secondary school, we chatted for several hours.

- Arrived in Montreal at about 12 midnight too. Nikil is nice enough to let me know I can crash at his place if anything goes wrong. Had already learnt my lesson and called the hostel beforehand.
- On Monday I walk around the mountains, the McGill university and hospital. People told me NUS has “no character” and that’s so true. The names, the structures.
- What’s most fascinating about Montreal is the underground city. Girls would love them for the intense shopping experience and with the weather, everyone wanted to stay indoors. Imagine newton to cityall all linked by underground paths and shelters so you can walk all the way and shop all the way without exposing yourself to the brutal cold air. Met two friends back to back. First Stephane, a humorous French guy who had completed countless marathon and Jit, the husband-caliber guy. Even for a smoothie, Jit had to translate all names of the fruits for me (but I think he’s not very good when it comes to the different berries hehe)

- Next morning woke up and pack my stuff to transfer to Stephane’s place cos the hostel had no more bed for me and I’m such a cheapskate. It’s really freezing cold outside. Someone told me if you put a can of coke outside, it’ll freeze in 15 mins but I think it can be done in 10 mins. Along the way, it started raining and I was splashed by the passing car TWICE! Ice and salty, murky water all over my body. I smell of diesel and cursed all the way.
- I took a cab from Stephane’s place to Chinatown and I arrived 7 minutes late. And I missed the bus to Quebec City which I had already paid for! Fu*k. Another heartache.
- Back to my new lodging and slept before going to a Viet restaurant for lunch. Montreal is supposed to have very good Viet food but it tasted the same as the one in Holland V. hehe
- Went to the “Celine Dion” church in the afternoon. Can’t remember the actual name but I know Celine Dion got married there. Nice. Lit a candle, prayed and got emo. Most of the attraction closed at 5 so didn’t get to do much that day.
- Dinner with Stephane was in a French bistro. Again everything is in French! If you don’t know French then I think you’ll have trouble in Montreal. Went grocery shopping and bought chicken bones chocolates which was a real mistake. Interestingly they have milk in plastic packets.

- Since I missed my Quebec tour and did the cathedral the day before, I have to come up with something to fill my New Year Eve. Don’t have a lot of $ to waste on other attraction (not that many anyway) so went to the museum since it’s FREE. Turn out to be pretty decent.
- Had burger and poutine for lunch and of cos French pastries :D
- Went to Jit’s place For NYE dinner with his family. His dad made turkey woot~ And talked to his mum about everything and chatted with his dad on the 1960s racial riots. And of cos that Vietnamese coffee.. will remember that night for a very long time. Got up twice to steal bread from the kitchen and caught by his mum on my first try. So paiseh.

- Next day went to have lunch with his friends and he brought me to another church in the mountain overlooking Montreal, too bad I did not bring along my cam. Sorry guys. But 多少情雨风雪冰都是我的Memory. All I can say is it’s worse than icy with lots of snow and if you never been to Montreal for winter then you really don’t know what is cold. Had dinner at his friend’s place. The chicken is omg omg omg delicious. Rosemary and citrus.

- Montreal is extremely cold (Singapore temperature but with a negative sign in front). You have to know French too. Nevertheless, it’s very nice, very relaxed, nice buildings. Winter is not the best time to come but again winter here is a romantic season. It gives you another excuse to rub hands, kiss, cuddle and hug. A couple walking briskly to a car, turn on the warm空调,然后大手牵着小手到空调前取暖,什么都不做… I find the notion so romantic :D no wonder the lyrics goes 雪花绽放的气候我们一起颤抖会更明白什么是温柔.
- I’m really glad things did not turn out as planned. Initially my trip only consist of Toronto and NYC and want to spend NYE watching the stupid ball drop from Times SQ. Never did I expect I would dislike NYC so much. LOL. Being in Montreal at least I had some family love and got to know people I like.

On my way from Ohio to Indy.. if you’re a granny who likes to sit in a plane to read lifestyle magazines, you might consider working for America airlines as air stewardess.
- So on 2nd Jan 2009, me, together with Jit and his friends set off to NYC. They rented an apartment while I stayed with Andy, my NYC friend.
- Central Park is my first stop in NYC. Enormous and SO many ppl jogging! Feeling more motivated to go back and start exercising. But central park is just a park. :D
- Next to the metropolitan. Biggest collection I have seen. Done Picasso, Van Gogh and Monet, as well as some tribal art. The thing about museum is not just the artifacts, but also the atmosphere… a process. It’s so busy and noisy. :(
- Empire state building is next. Lines after lines. The waiting is a pain and the crowd made me nauseous and it turns out to be just another tall building, after the CN towers, Petronas, John Hancock and Sears. Travelling is like choosing your other half, once you seen mountains, it’s hard to settle for hills.
- Joined Jit and co. in Chinatown to have Malaysian food, meeting them makes me feel better. The curry was nice and some of the dishes were rather spicy. After dinner, I joined Andy and friends for Indian food which was disappointing. And that very night, I closed both eyes and bought my air tickets. Did you hear the pling-plang sound of shattering heart?

- Had a much better time during my trip to meet the mother of exiles aka lady in the harbor. Early in the morning, not that crowded (bigger space maybe), saw a few couples kissing under the statue (there’s a quote that goes like – without liberty there’s no love). Went to Ellis Island to learn about the early immigrants and even got a chance to visit a section not yet opened to the public. Met Jonas and tagged along for shopping and joined Jit and Mark for dinner. Being with them reminds me of our monthly gathering, tons of crapping and chats.

Can’t remember the one who told me human are hard to change. After the weekend in NYC, I think he/she might be correct to a certain extent. Remember not so many years ago because I’m still very young, someone asked me why I won’t turn up in a social meeting when there are > 10 ppl. I felt uneasy in crowded, dirty and noisy areas and those were the main reason I dislike NYC. Walking on Times SQ, I felt empty under all the glaring billboards screens. Okay I know what you’ll say next but the more you travel, the more you would want to travel. 等到风景都看透也许我会陪你看细水长流 :D or 谁愿意陪着我环游世界去?

Day 1
5 connection flights. Poor quality and quantity of sleep on the plane and in the airport. Sickening altitude sickness. Extreme dry conditions. And because it´s so high up, >4200m abv sea-level, the day is scorching hot and the night is chilling cold.
Went to the recommended hostels without reservations. Quite daring but luckily they have beds for me. 10USD a night :D I slept in a dorm with five others. Luckily none of them snore. The bad thing about my hostel is the shower facilities. You adjust the shower to the right temp and the next min it becomes freezing cold again. The best thing is can come out partly hot and partly cold.
My first day is quite a torture actually. My head spinning like crazy, my lips chapped and cracked and even walking a few steps is enough to make me pant. The traffic here is one of the worst I have seen but the people are generally helpful. The chifa (Peruvian Chinese – eat rice) restaurant owner initiated to cook the rice for 5 more minutes (again because of the altitude), just for me. I also managed to visit some of the pre-inca burial grounds and a local home, seems quite authentic. Seen alpaca, llama and vincuca. Cute. Met a Singaporean couple - mum and daughter on one of the tours but didn´t go up and say hi. When travelling, i prefer to talk to the locals but in my case, there’s really very very very few local who speaks english... i can even barely understand the guide. Maybe Puno isn’t as developed as the rest of the cities. Hopefully Cusco will be better.

Day 2

On my 2nd day in puno, i went to the nearby islands at lake titicaca, which the highest navigable lake and about 5 times the size of singapore. It was an eye opener.
The floating islands are made up of plants only!
The amaniti island is the best part. There is no street lights or hot water. Each family has only one water tap and if you want to bath you can jump into the lake which is about 10 degrees. Needless to say, i skipped my bath. For meals, i never had so many potatoes in my life before. Peru is indeed a potato nation. I shared a room with two other guys. Never really sleep well. Had a tough time going the loo because it was total darkness and the sheeps outside might meh meh anytime while you’re doing your business, not to mention the super STRONG winds and LONG path.

Day 3
Got seasick and puked on the 3rd day when travelling to the other island. Boring place. Had a nice dinner – alpaca steaks.

Day 4
Took a bus to cusco. 6 ppl in a 40 seater bus. Only one required English translation and that was me. Super paiseh.Went to a hostel recommended by my friends in the previous hostel. Risking again. Turn out to be a good choice. Even though i had to do a hostel transfer for a night but it was taken care.

Had a city tour today. again, a small group of 5. Am really amazed by the architecture work of the inca. Wanna eat cuy but the restaurant i went to don’t serve it today. Disappointed. Raining and it’s cold even for my standard. I hope it won’t rain for the next 4 days when I’m doing my inca trail.

Just finished the inca trail. Met nice ppl from all over the world and seen awesome scenaries.
Love walking in the clouds… like spa when you feel the mist on your face!
Didn´t take many pictures of the ruins because you can get them at better resolution online. Did took some nice group photos though. :DAlso sent the souveniers. Hope you guys will recieve them soon!

Day 10
Did the sacred valley tour the day after i complete the inca trail. Thought it would be a relaxing day but... Still amazed by inca's architecture. Tried cuy... 45 Soles for one small little thingy. Cannot finished and wanna bring the remaining half back but the waiter told me the chef threw the whole thing away! In the end they replaced me with aplaca steak instead and I gave it away to the hostel staff. Just when i arrived at the office i was told i have to pay extra for my trip!! Let me know if you want to have the details.

Day 11
I left cusco early in the morning for lima. Will be in lima for a ~10 hours before flying back to the States. The cab from the airport to the museum cost 50 soles... got chopped... and the taxi driver brought me to the wrong museum the first time round and still ask for tips but i did give him 5 Soles when we reached the correct destination... but it was closed! Anyway i ditched that cab driver and decided to walk back to the first museum myself. I don't really trust fat, always laughing and smiling taxi uncles. I prefer the grumpy old ones :D

Along the way i ate some really nice Peruvian sashimi in the wet market (risking again) and not-so-nice tiramisu.After the museum, i went downtown for the cathedrals but most of them are not opened to public for various reasons.Decide to walk around... museums i went are all in spanish. :(Strolled to Chinatown... packed like CNY. And the food is really good!!! Ate a meat bun and randomly select some pastries (no Chinese translation!)As expected, many had pineapple and caramel in them. Localization i guessed.Downtown is really messy so take a cab to miraflores which is one of the nicer neighbourhood in Lima.Much better. More sophisticated. Sat in one of the cafe and had a latte and some super sweet dessert which taste like chiku pudding.Met some friends and chat over chai latte.

Reached the airport at 10pm and was told the flight was delayed for 2 hrs and I'll be reaching Indy 3 hrs late since all my connecting flights (lim-miami-dallas-indy) were rescheduled.Rot in the airport.Finally onboard to Miami and upon arrival was detained at customs because i left some important documents in the check-in bag. Damn. Missed my connecting flight to dallas. Went around the airport looking for help and managed to get another flight straight to indy :D So in the end, i arrived in indy 2 hrs earlier than expected. BUT upon arrival i was told my luggage will only arrived in CHICAGO in 8pm ?!? They won't be able to contact me since my phone is dying and the charger is in the check-in bag. So hopefully the concierge will receive them. Arg. What a pain.

November Gathering (8th & 9th Nov)

8th November 2008 marks Garry's big day...it also marks wach-mach-wach gang's step towards travelling overseas together! heh...our very ferst step...dat is, to JB....

the prep werk only started a few days ago b4 the actual day...heh..(cos i was too bz...sorrie guys!!!) i updated the blog to state all the nitty-grittys...n called garry regarding the transport...n emailed austin hills fer accommodation...it wasnt dat difficult to liaise with all these logistics i must say....at least not as hard as i imagined it wld be...overseas trip leh....but of cos big half of the werk goes to garry too...heh....it was only on Friday nite at 8+pm when jh called to ask if we need to get aniting for the church wedding...well, i tot all was too late...i'm stuck at my piano teacher's hse n will only finish at 9+pm...where to get anything?? luckily when i chionged to jp, the bookshop was still open!! so went in n decided wad to buy within 10 min....n i was sooo satisfied with wad i bot for the couple....at least we wun be empty-handed...heh...*sorry ar garry n kat, it was all so last min...*

jj, johnny, jh, jy, ct, yl, kat's fren n i met at kranji mrt stn at 9am on this saturday to start off our journey....as usual some were late...but luckily traffic was smooth, no hiccups, n we reached at 10.45am in jb custom to meet up with the driver which garry has kindly arranged fer us...nice comfy van fer the 8 of us....tinking dat we were in time for the church wedding at 11.30am, we told the driver to send us to austin hill ferst...so dat we can leave our luggage with them...tho we cant check in till 3pm....the journey took 1/2 hr....n only when we reached did we realise that the church was actually near the custom...faintz!!! so we dumped our bags in the reception room that din look all too safe....heck...no choice...should have just kept our luggages on the van...haa...din tink of it...

it took us another 1/2 hr or so to reach the church....n obviously we were late by den....missed part of the pastor's sharing....which was quite interesting...haa...two-become-one theory...n the xuan2 wai4 zhi1 yin1 by the little ger...fantastic soprano singer! but we din miss the most impt part!! the vows~! n there! we have the newly weds - Mr n Mrs Garry Wang!!

and then, it was time for shopping! heh...haven been to jb fer v long...n never to tis part of jb b4...so we went to jusco at tebrau city...sc din join us cos he has a different role todae....he is a xiong di...*haa...erm...not dat other daes he's a jie mei la*...but he needs to help out with the tea ceremony and all later on...jjj, jhjy bot stuff....yl n johnny got a haircut....mi n ct? nah...just window shopped....sianz....then we celebrated jj and jy's (belated) bdae....had cakes and finger food at Vivo's Pizza...really cheap...except that iced water costs RM0.50...haa...

next, we headed back to austin hills to check in...n wow~! the room is HUGE!

and before long, it was time to doll ourselves up for the dinner at Beijing Lou!!

the photo shoots are so well-taken...we all loved them to bits....very nice pics indeed!! (how can it not be nice since it's taken in australia n costs $11k???) the video was very entertaining too....haa...mabbe garry shld upload it fer the sake of ly hoo din get to see it...n see how the guys were being bullied by the sisters...haa...

Food was great! every dish was fantastic....it was a big ballroom with 65 tables...imagine dat! woah! when the ferst dish was served, there was a 'performance' by the waiters n waitresses....n ended with firewerks! rite there inside the restaurant! there was chinese orchestra performance on the stage...n speech given by the pastor n garry's dad...who donated money to some beneficiaries....how nice of him to rem the less fortunate even when he is celebrating this happy occasion! the WANG2's all so rich...=P

At the end of the day, we were all so bushed...reached back hotel, wash up n slept....tho the room was huge, there were only 2 king-sized beds...so ct, me, jj n johnny squeezed in one...n sc, zw, yl in the other...i guess it was not all too comfortable...but it was just fer a nite...poor ct got kicked out of bed...n sc nearly kissed zw n had a bad scare waking up in the middle of the nite to see zw's face an inch away...haa...

Day 2

we all woke up at 9+am...din have breakfast n was waiting for zm n garry's call as to where we can go....me lousy organiser tis time round...=P

so while waiting, we watched doraemon, explored around the resort - there were bowling and table tennis and swimming and carrom....we when zm reached, we drove down to Old Town to meet the newly weds for brunch....n man! we ordered so much food...the guys were like starved for days or wad...ate 2-3 servings....gosh~! amazing....

next up, we visited garry's hse...

This is Garry's dog...very poor ting...if you look closely, both its fore legs are broken...n it limps every step it takes...tho i never like animals, but really pitiful....n the reason was he liked to sit outside cross-legged...(one good life dog)...n a car niam over his legs...even tho he was on plaster cast, n mabbe crutches, it was still broken n he had to walk lidat forever....*sobz*

First time at garry's hse despite we knew each other fer so long....had a good chat....him bringing out the precious ancient CD with all our sec sch neoprints on it....gosh!!! the guys played games there....the gers admiring kat's scrapbooking keepsakes....so nice!! very inspired but no money n time...=( n jj n johnny wanted to engage garry's video guy for their wedding....so we watched some very entertaining clips over the net which the video guy had previously done up....some games were really absurd...haa....very farnie tho....

n atlas, it was time fer us to go...cos din wan to b cot in the jam....so we headed to city square n wanted to do some shopping...but we dilly-dally as usual lar...so no time....cong n zw went karaoke-ing, zm went back to his malaysia home...so the rest of us walked to the custom n took bus home....

dat's the end of our very short trip....but it was a nice experience attending an overseas wedding, attending the ferst official wedding of our own scc vice-chairman, hanging out tog as the wach-mach-wach gang across the causeway....n tis is the very ferst step towards venturing out further away from singapore for our monthly gatherings!!! Way to go, guys!!! =)

October Gathering 2008 外传之 [菜头被砍]

Interesting title? Read on then. I'll first go with the prologue. If you have no patience, just jump to chapter "HEY! NICE FOOD!". After all, I still needa note down the entire day's happening mah.

PROLOGUE
As usual after our official gathering, we will have optional impromptu events. We went over to Raffles City to do shopping (more of window shopping). Walk ah walk. Then we took a nice rest @ MOS Burger. Planning what to do next, we decided to walk over to Cathay to see any movie to watch or not.

Reached there liao and saw the timing. Eh! Wow! Those 9pm shows still available wor. Let's check them out. Damn! All the 9pm shows, though still available, they only left the first few rows seats. If possible, we should always avoid sitting in the first few seats. It's not good for the neck, and we are getting old already. So it was a no go. So we decided to walk over to PS and see what we can do over there.

When we entered PS, we went into G2000 first. It has a nice sales going on there. 30% on selected items (a lot of the items are selected actually =\, that they could actually say the whole store is on sales instead), and another 15% off the final bill if you are a dbs/posb credit/debit card holder. Doing some maths, it's actually
a total of 40.5% discount. HEY! That's a lot! We spent quite a long time inside there. J and J set 1 and Ct getting stuff from there, so they were trying out the clothes. As for me, I'm planning to get them next week, so I just look look and I'm done.

THE 1ST SIGN OF AN EXCITING NIGHT
I went up to the 2nd floor, took a quick look at Mark and Spencer. Kinda done over there, so I went back down to G2000 to see if they were good to go. When travelling down the escalator, I caught a glimpse of a drama going on. Being a nosey guy myself, I definitely wanna know what the drama was about mah. Then looking at the path the group was moving, I stationed myself at 1 spot and listened. This is how the story goes.

Guy B was scolding Guy A. Guy A was with his wife, Wife A, and 2 kids. Guy B was accusing Guy A of committing adultery with Guy B's wife, Wife B. Apparently, prior to this, Guy B should have already pestered Guy A before because Guy B also got scold Guy A reporting to police that Guy B was disturbing him. But still, Guy B was quite a persistent person. Guy B just kept following Guy A from one shop to another, stopping his path of way every now and then. Hollering loud accusation of Guy A lying to Wife A and to the police. Guy B also talked to Wife A asking if she knew of 3 dates that Guy A went to XXX country on the account of working, and blah blah blah. Basically it was a typical kind of adultery happening you saw on TV. So you know the story.

Funny thing was, Wife A was actually smiling and not bothered by what Guy B had been saying. So there are only 3 reasons why.
1. Guy A cleaned his backside super clean liao, and already previously convinced Wife A that he's clean way before Guy B came into picture.
2. Guy B got it all the way wrong.
3. Wife A scare pai seh. Just wanna get out and go home argue with Guy A.

But the whole happening was pretty eye-catching (and ears too) that a lot of people inside PS were actually watching the drama! It was actually quite a short drama, but Guy B just kept repeating his points over and over again. So I got away from where I was stationed and went back into G2000 to report. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!

APPROACHING TO THE EVENT OF THE NIGHT
Since we skipped dinner, so we were thinking maybe we should go have some supper or something. And we decided to go Newton Circus for supper. So off we went, tracing our way back to Raffles City to hop on the R32 and made our way to Newton Circus.

Just upon entering the middle of the food center, we were quickly ushered in by an Uncle and he found us seats. Introducing his NEW stalls to us and showing us his CHEAPER seafood/zicha menu, he told us to slowly look through and call for him when we were ready to order. That uncle was very friendly and helpful. Thumbs up!

HEY! NICE FOOD!

Looking through the menu, we were actually thinking of ordering the tiger prawn and the stingray to try. Maybe because Jh was gone ordering some popiahs =~( , we were coerced into ordering a pepper crab to try due to Uncle's superb sales technique.

After some time, the food came and we tried. OMG! It was so nice!!!

The tiger prawns were so huge! And usually with such thick meat, it's harder to cook them nicely and stuff. But hey! The meat was nice! QQ and great taste!

The pepper crab was something not within our original order, but it was nice too! The crab was fresh, pepper wasn't too overwhelming, it was so nice.

And this stingray. FWAH~ The meat texture was nice! The sambal most of the time will hardly go wrong in the first place, so it's down to the stingray itself and the cooking technique. This one was definitely pretty nicely done. What I can say was, the food was simply superb.

WAIT A MINUTE

Huh? The rating icons were funny? Good job on noticing that. The rating for the food was 4/5, but at the same time, there's the rating I will give for that Uncle's dok carrot skills. Let me slowly expose this uncle skill. Of course we had some allies along the way.

ALLIES BESIDE US

When our food came,and we were happily eating it. There was this Auntie, she kept walking to and fro us, smiling and grinning at us. Spooky eh? But one point of time, she spoke, she was saying we tio dok jialat jialat. No idea how the thing actual goes, but Jy asked the Auntie where's the toilet and the Auntie showed her the way. Inside the toilet, the Auntie exposed big secret of the Uncle.

She told Jy that the Uncle was very skilled in scamming people. His mouth was very good at convincing people (but to me I think that's still a kind of proper sales). However, the worse part is though he say he will throw in discount here and there, eventually we will just be spending at least 50 bucks more than what we should be charged for.

After J and J set 1 came back from the toilet, Jy spreaded the words to us. The truth struck all of us hard. Ouch! And our wallet.

WALLET DEFENCE

So now, we gotta strategize our defence. We went through our orders and the weight of the prawns and crab the Uncle told us previously, did our maths and stuff. The Auntie, from time to time, heard our discussion, will walk past us and told us how heavy the prawn and crab were, and how much it should be at.

With our maths done and a general idea how heavy should those things weigh, we called for our bills. True enough, the Uncle did add on around 100g for each item, comparing to what the Auntie had hinted us. But you know, the Uncle was so friendly and helpful, there was times that I was actually doubting the Auntie's words instead.

Then as usual, it's the more daring and smarter Jh will be handling the defence vanguard. He told the Uncle the prawns cant be that heavy what, and the Uncle even offered us to go to his store and weigh it if we don't believe. But what I can say was if the Uncle is so confident, it could just mean the weighing machine was nicely tempered with. So I was thinkng no point going over and weigh it ourselves.

With great bargaining skill of J and J set 1, they managed to hack down the price a bit more and it came down to $140. HOLY SHIT! But well, we learned our lesson. After paying, we sat around a moment and was discussing the whole incident again, how the Uncle's marketing and sales technique caught us right from the moment we stepped into the food center. I had almost gave the Uncle a full 5/5 marks for dok carrot heads.

ADVERSE EFFECT

Sometimes, when a job was already very nicely done, but yet you feel like perfecting it further more. Often in these situations, things usually turned out for the worse. When we about to 拍拍屁股 and walk off, the Uncle came back and told Jh to follow him and weigh for himself. The gang of us followed and see see.

At there, the Uncle took the lightest and heaviest prawns and weighed to show us the min and max weight of the prawns they have. No doubts, I can see that their tiger prawns were seriously bigger than the ones I saw at the nearby stores. The Uncle was weighing them over and over again to show us his points. But that was his first mistake.

We noticed that the weighing machine was never empty. Meaning, when he wanted to weigh the 2nd prawn for us to see, he will always throw the 2nd prawn in first, and take out the 1st prawn. What he wanted to prevent us from seeing was the weighing machine @ its zeroed position. Jh sounded it out (I humji-ly standing behind watching drama though I noticed it too =|) and told Uncle to remove both prawns. Ah ha! Uncle starting to panick liao. The weighing machine was actually zeroed with an addition 100g. That's an additional $7 for each prawn and $3.50 for the crab.

Although the Uncle was insisting the weighing machine was like that by default, but come on lah, we know how weighing machine works too leh. So, after Jh zeroed the weighing machine properly and weighed the prawn again, it was shown that the prawns weighed 200+g the most. Then the boss inside came out and asked what's wrong, and we told him the issue. After some arguement, the Uncle was still insisting he's right, then the boss said this in hokkien to the Uncle, "I'm the boss, you don't talk!". Then the boss refunded the extra cost that we paid, and that further reduced it to $112. That's a lot of difference! But well, we managed to get some money back and we learned our lesson well too. =) It was just SOOOO an eventful night.

WATCH OUT

Here's some details of the store that Uncle was working at. It's store 52 @ Newton Circus. The Uncle will come to you very friendly one. He claimed the store was new, he just wanna establishs some name here so he will throw in discount and stuff. He also claimed that there are 2 chefs inside (which in actual fact, we only saw the boss inside), and he opened this stall with his brother (but the real boss said this, "I'm the boss, you don't talk!"). The Auntie said he was previously working in other stores, but was sacked due to some scamming issues. And here he is continuing his scamming legacy. So, ya... Just watch out for this store when, and if you feel touristy, you visit Newton Circus for supper. Need more details? Tag it! The people involved will gladly reply your queries.

Man... it was such a pity. The food was really good... But here we can see.

Once again, it's the time for our WMW monthly gathering. This month we went to Peninsula Excelsior Hotel's Colesman Cafe for Tunch Buffet.

Let's go through some introduction first. Why Colesman Cafe? To make long story short, we had some reservation disagreement with Carousel and looking through the UOB list of dining privileges, we decided to try Colesman Cafe.

Now, what is "tunch"? Something like "brunch", tunch simply is Tea + Lunch. The buffet starts from 12pm, and lasts until 4pm. 4 hours for you to eat until you song and drop dead.

So, ya. October's gathering was @ Peninsula Excelsior Hotel's Colesman Cafe. The story on who's the organiser everyone knows already, so I'll skip that part. =X Okay, we set to meet @ 1pm. Although I set 1pm, the actual time i was looking @ was 130pm. Smart hor? But still, people are only starting to flock in @ 130pm instead of reaching @ 130pm. (I can scold this time because I was super on time. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!) Rene came much more later because organiser buay gan, so she couldn't arrange her schedule nicely. AND RENE BECAME SO MUCH DIFFERENT!! RETURN THE ORIGINAL ONE BACK TO US!!!

The price for the buffet was definitely okay lah. Not that expensive for a lunch buffet, but the highlight is it was a 1-for-1. The 2 treating guys were kinda cheapskate, so they chose somewhere cheap. =D As for the food mah. They are all pretty nice, but I had some issues with their desserts lah. I'm a lover of desserts, so I'm pretty particular about it. Sadly, no chance of seeing my legendary "HIGH" look while eating the desserts.

Variety of the food, I don't to say a lot or what. Lemme list down some that I can remember. Around 6 or slightly more kinds of Chinese-style of meats/fish, otah, sotong ball, chicken chipolata, siew mai, har kao, char siew bao, salad, potato salad, smoked salmon, fried cheese tofu, nuggets, fried popiah, plus a few more I don't remember. Dessert section got tarts, eclair, cream puff, fruits, 3 kind of soup desserts, jellies, brownies, 4 cakes and fondue fountain with some dips. Then outside got 1 pushcart doing Penang Laksa and siou bak.

But anyway, our gathering, what matters most is the company of one another, not what we do right? Ya......... We ate, talked, backstabbing, updating one another, shooting arrows, laughed, took photos... Well, pretty much like we always do all along, and we are never tired or sick of doing them! Woot~

This month was a short gathering. Maybe we all miss Laiyi... It was a 2hours+ meet up. Nevertheless, we enjoyed every moment of it. =~) Alright! That kinda sums up this month's gathering. Let's look forward for our next month gathering, our first oversea gathering!

The September Outing was held on 20th September (Between 17 - Sc bday & 24 - Ct bday). There were many suggestions prior to the outing and finally it was decided that we shall go for the Mini Steamboat Delight at Parkway Parade. Jiehe did the booking for us since he was the one who suggest it. :)

Jiehe was the first one to reach. Follow by the rest. The Mini steamboat delight is located at parkway parade, in the basement food court, right beside the drinks stall.

Hey guys,
How are you doing?
First and foremost, happy birthday to SC and CT!!
So sorry I wasn’t there to celebrate your bday with you. Also, hopefully you guys got eat my share of mooncakes.

I decide to give an update earlier than I intend to cos it was raining thru out the day and my trip to the indy museum was postphoned. Everyone has been asking if I’m near Houston and affected by the hurricane. I’m safe and a distance away but would wish to experience it, just a teenie weenie bit will do.

So, the past few weeks I made a trip to Chicago and St Louis. Okay, lets talk about St Louis. It’s a state of Missouri, well known for it’s Gateway arch. But what captivated me are the beautiful sculptures in the botanical garden. Worth every cent. Very inspiring and creative. I wish I could see something similar in Singapore. Other than that, the zoo and museums are all free. It’s a place I would like to go back and visit before I leave the States.
And a week later, I went Chicago. The day before, I was at the maroon 5/Counting crows concert… kind of boring and when I reached home, it’s already past 12. With just a few hours, I managed to pack up, sleep and went for a tanning session. But then the thing that cannot get flushed out of the toilet bowl was quite disturbing. Chicago is the nearest civilization to me and a bus trip for 4 hours cost about 50 bucks. Chicago is much more like Singapore. But then the tram runs 24/7 which means I don’t have to take cab home after clubbing!
A pitcher of long island for $14. Beat that. In Singapore, the cheap and dilute ones cost about $14 bucks. Saw some drags along the street, dunno why but mostly blacks. Also went to the museums in Chicago. Pretty decent, although ppl tell me those in NYC is much more magnificent. Guess I’ll be going back for the long island soon.

Okay, it’s pretty windy now, I think the window need to be fixed cos it’s loose and the wind kept coming in. Imagine winter time. From where I’m sitting, saw a rainbow in the horizon and patches of light and shadow floating by. Hope everyone is fine and serene is recovering well.

Life in Indy

It has been 2 months… How are you guys?

JJ is already taken, JH did his Japan post, SC looks thin the first time since er… secondary school? Serene should start class for a search team and CT came back from Veit and did her Aug post. So next month would be a Mac party? I’ll vote for it, since I’m also surviving on pizza and ice cream here. And can get to see some of the other ex-members. That would be cool.
Realised SC and JJ both upload some pics from last year’s gathering onto facebook. Brought back some fond memories.. but wondering if anyone had the sec 3/4 pics stored there. That would be really funny. I had some new pictures on Facebook too but I didn’t forget you guys. Have some pics exclusively for this site.

Earlier this month, I went shopping at the outlet malls before stopping at Chicago for a walk and dinner. Will be going there on the Labour Day (1/9) weekend again for a more detailed tour. It’s about 5hrs bus ride from indy and it’s completely different. I feel like I’m in some sort of civilization when I walk along the streets of Chicago.

Last week I went to pick berries and peaches. Not a big fan of peach, but I had finished up quite a bucketful of blueberries and blackberries. They were so juicy and sweet! In Singapore, they’re either very expensive, or very sour. We didn’t wash the fruits before eating but heck care. Eat as much as you can first cos eat on the spot is free! That’s the Singapore spirit. The americans were just picking and placing the fruits in the buckets. I wished I can go to the farm every month. In the end I bought home like a quarter of what I ate in the farm.

On Sunday, I went to the indiana state fair with an angmoh friend. They got all these exhibitions of everything under the sun, cows, horses, plants, cabbage, cookies, paintings etc. Not very interesting if you’re not into farm animals, vegetables and art. And it’s super crowded. Maybe cos it’s a Sunday and sch reopened on the following Monday.

A few days ago, I met up with a bunch of Singaporeans living around indiana for dinner (post national day celebration). When you chat with fellow Singaporeans, it’s different. Yes, we’re very sociable, we can mix with any and everyone but then when you talked to someone with similar experiences and use the same slang, you can immediately feel the connection. It feels like I’m in Singapore. It’s a night of bonding and laughter.

More recently, I met up with a group of china interns who attachment in Lilly is coming to an end. They’re a bunch of nice people, and very funny. And I feel that they are very outspoken and speak strongly of what they see as rightful, while I’m the only one eating the food. Singaporeans really cannot fight, they’re well read and everyone sounds like a lawyer or debater. But I find it odd when they call my name in full, guess I’m just not used to it yet.

This weekend will be going to another potluck party…like that everyday eat like a pig sure very fat, some more when I look at the people here I also got no motivation to go gym. And the amount of money I spent on eating is enough for a trip to San Fran if I reduced my portions by a third. Haiz, must remind myself not to buy so many branded stuff and eat less ice cream. Planning to go NYC and Puerto rico this year and hopefully (if I got enough $$) to Argentina… depending on the air tics.

National Day outdoor gathering

The August gathering was held on 9 August 2008 - Happy Birthday, Singapore!!!

Why did we choose it to be on National Day? Ha.. we wanted to utilize our nation's luck - usually, it wont rain on National day.. And indeed, ti gong bo bi us... It was a super super hot day and of cos, the outdoor gathering was a successful one.

The day before the gathering, we had some voting - either to meet in the morning or late noon for the walk. Oh well... jh jy sc voted for the late noon session and the rest voted for the morn. So majority wins - 4 morn vs 3 noon. Since its in the morn, jy could not join us as she had tuition in the morn.. Nvm.. she can see the details from our blog.

We were supposed to meet at 1030am at Alexandra Arch. JJJ reached on the dot, followed by sc then me/rene, with jh the latest arriving at ard 11am. After the whole gang was here, we took a grp photo.

Before we start the trail, we distributed our souvenirs. I had with me coffee powder and tea bags. Of cos, i wouldn't want to carry it with me along the trail, so i had to give it all out. Sc and jh gave out theirs from Japan also.

From here, we went in to HortPark. It was a nice park which was made up of recycled items. Quite a fairytale like park also.

It was a very very hot and sunny day. The sun was sorching hot and we were perspiring all over.

Alrite, thats me being the auntie who take the umbrella. It was damn hot and i din want to get sunburnt further as i was alr bit tanned from my Vietnam trip...

Next, we moved on and we walked to Mount Faber.

After which, we thot we had passed by the Marang Trail but actually we took the wrong route. Oh well.. we thot we had to walk a longer distance since we took the wrong route.. But who knows, as we walked on, we approached the road along vivocity!! Hooray!!! We can finally end our walk as all of us were sunburnt and tired from the hot sun.. See our victory faces:

After lunch, we split up - jy to watch fireworks with her frens, i had to meet my frens at orchard, jjj gg to see furniture. Thats make it left with sc, jh and rene. Oh well, they proceeded to Sentosa. I duno the details from here onwards. I guess you all can refer to rene's blog for the details. She blogged it down alr.

This was indeed one of the rare outdoor gathering we have and of cos, thanks to the great weather. I guess all of us had fun that day as the walk was a unique one and im glad all of us managed to get some exercise despite the hot sun.

CT's Vietnam Trip

Alrite, i better start blogging abt my Vietnam trip before i completely forget abt the details. It was really too happening for me in this 1wk. Practically, i was to flew off on Sunday and the day before i went for the NDP Preview. The weather was great and the NDP Preview was great. So was the fireworks. Its been 10 years since i went for NDP and i was lucky enuff to ballot for the tix. Here comes my Vietnam (aka Saigon) trip......

Day 1 (3 Aug):

The flight was in the wee hours of 725am. The time in Vietnam was 1h behind Spore. We reached at ard 8+am Vietnam time. We took cab from the Tan Son Nhat airport to our hotel - Elios hotel at Pham Ngu Lao Street, District 1. After checking in, we headed to a local tour agency - The Sinh Cafe to book our local tours for the next 2 days. Next, our first destination - Ben Thanh market which was 15min walk from our hotel. It was a market which was divided into various sections - clothes, accessories, dried goods etc.

After Ben Thanh market, we stood outside the market and was looking at the map when a passerby A approaches us and offered to help. I was thinking wah, got so nice ppl. Oh well... he was actually a cyclo rider. He offered to bring us to the places we wanted to. We had some communication prob and i thot we verbally agreed on VND15,000 per trip (SGD1-2) for 4 ppl altog. Thinking that we kio tio sai, we happily agreed. The riders were so nice during the trip and told us alot of things etc. We went to 4 places so 4 trips. At our last destination (diamond plaza), they din let us alight at the front of the shopping mall. They let us alight by the side road. And damn.. once i got off the cyclo, the person told me 'hey money, VND600,000' per person. Well, 4 trips shd be VND 60,000. Wat the........ End up 4 of us each gave VND600,000. Thats like, VND3.2m (SGD 200). Damn piss off.. duno is it communication prob or they were out to cheat us. We did agreed on VND15,000 per trip for 4 ppl.

After dnr, we went to the supermarket. Oh well, that is where i got the dripper coffee and tea bags for you all and my frens. After this, we CAB (no more cyclos for us) back to our hotel. After which, we went out for coffee at their common coffee outlet.

During the coffee session, we keep cursing the cyclo riders cos VND600,000 to them can last very long and we were saying how many mths/years they no need work after we were 'cheated' by them.

Day 2 (4 Aug):

Local tour - Mekong Delta Trip (My Tho & Ben Tre)

This trip costs VND160,000 (SGD 12 - 13).

We had the hotel breakfast. There was a variety. Photos and some artistic shots here...

After which, we gathered outside the agency and a bus took us to My Tho city - another part of Vietnam. The bus ride took abt 2h and we were all sleeping in the bus. Damn tired from the flight the day b4.

Upon reaching My Tho city, we took the boat ride to Con Phung (Phoenix Island). We watched the manufacture of their rice paper and had a simple Vietnamnese lunch.

After lunch, we headed to the tropical fruits garden and continued with a horse ride.

The horse cart... an exciting ride as the road was bumpy and 6 ppl + 1 rider had to share the same cart... But it as a totally different experience..

Thats how the horse cart look like... (there's an ang moh shuai ge there. he was on the same local tour grp as us.. hehe)

The horse ride took us to a bees garden where we had some honey drink. Bees were buzzing ard. So horrible.

From there, we proceeded to a sampan ride to our main boat.

After the boat ride, we went to the coconut factory where those coconut candies were being manufactured.

Our last stop for the Mekong Delta Trip...

We headed back to Saigon at ard evening. After which, we headed to a Ngoc Suong Marina seafood restaurant for our feast. It was damn cheap and worth it and delicious. 7 dishes altog (comprise of crab, prawns, scallop etc) cost ard SGD 70+ for 4 ppl.

The wonderful feast marks the end of our day.

Day 3 (5 Aug):

Local tour - Cu Chi tunnels and Ho Chi Minh city tour

This trip costs VND160,000 (SGD 12 - 13).

No trip to Vietnam is complete without the Cu Chi tunnels. Im sure most of you have heard of it b4. Thats where the Cu Chi ppl lived during the arduous Vietnamnese war.

Well, we did go into the tunnel and it was really dark, squeey, stuffy and dusty inside. We din complete the whole tunnel. We made our way out after finishing the 1st part of it. Its just for the experience and i din want to dirty myself further.. Hehe...

Next, we had the city tour - War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Catheral and General Post Office..

Day 4 (6 Aug):

Today we headed down to district 5 - chinatown (Cho Lon).

After our shopping, we went to Hung Vuong Plaza. It somewhat looks like our Paragon. We passed by during our cab ride and so decided to go there.

Oh well, we did have some extra time since we din want to go back to District 1 so fast. So we watched 2 movies - Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Hellboy. It was damn cheap and also there's a happy wednesday special price. 1 tix cost VND 40,000 (SGD 3-4). So why not, we hoot 2 movies....

We ended our day by going to the Ben Thanh night market to get some stuff and headed back to hotel after that.

Day 5 (7 Aug):

Basically, we din do much on this day. We checked out and left our luggage with the hotel and went to Ben Thanh day market to do some last min shopping and we headed to eat at the famous pancake cafe. It was super crowded and cheap. 5-7 dishes and each of us paid ard SGD 4-5 only.

As we did not want to venture further, we went back to the hotel lobby and wait for our flight time. We rotted 3-4h in the hotel lobby - either napping or using the hotel's computer to surf net. Act we had no $$ alr also. The cyclos cheated us of VND600,000 was quite alot.

We headed via cab to the airport and here we bid farewell to Vietnam. Flight only took 1+h and we rch Spore at ard 1230am (friday).

My thoughts:

The trip was generally ok. I din buy alot of stuff except for those coffee powder and teabags. The shopping style was not so Spore style. But there are alot of embroidery bags and pouch. It was also difficult to communicate there also as most of them dun really speak English and Chinese. I rem i wanted to look at sth and i say 'see', the stall seller had to pt to her eyes to imply 'see'. This is how it is.. Overall, it was a simple getaway trip from Spore and work without having to spend alot.
